Making Food Fun Helping at HomeHelping at Home

We all want our kids to grow up healthy. Encouraging your children to eat more fruits and vegetables and be active for at least 60 minutes each day can help ensure they are on the road to good health and can help reduce their risk of certain chronic diseases, including obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.

Throughout the school year, the Network for a Healthy California—LAUSD works with district teachers to find creative ways to teach students about eating right and staying fit. Through different classroom projects, kids learn about, prepare and enjoy many nutritious foods and recipes. And, we help kids get moving through many fun and enjoyable physical activity demonstrations.

It’s important that the healthy lessons we’re teaching kids during the school day continue even after our students leave the classroom. When kids are at home, they need to continue eating more fruits and vegetables and being physically active. As parents, you are an important part of making sure this happens.

We are always looking for ways to make sure parents have the information they need to encourage healthy choices at home. There are several parent education classes you can take at no charge. These are presented as a free benefit to schools that participate in our program.

Bilingual Parent Nutrition Promotion:
Our Bilingual Parent Resource consultant is available to do one-time, nutrition education presentations at parent meetings and school events. These interactive sessions give you the opportunity to ask questions and get ideas for how you can encourage healthy eating and physical activity at home.

Dietitian Parent Nutrition Workshops:
Network schools are able to request a parent presentation that covers the benefits of good nutrition and physical activity. Delivered by a Registered Dietitian (RD), the presentations are approximately one-hour long and include a hands-on, food sampling activity.

Online Resources:
There are many credible Web sites from organizations such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society that can give you and your kids tips for achieving better nutrition at home and getting the whole family physically active. These sites offer advice free of charge.   Click on the “resources” tab to learn more.

Be sure to check with your child’s school to learn more about these programs and resources!
